To ensure the success of any BI implementation a well defined BI strategy is a key component. The BI Strategy will provide the direction for all the important decisions and will also ensure that an enterprise wide perspective is used when making decisions on e.g. which technologies to use.
 
The key steps in defining a BI strategy are as follows:

• Analyze and document the future information needs
• Analyze and document the current situation
• Build and document an implementation plan

In each of the steps technologies as well as processes and structures will have to be considered.
